I have just finished a new book project, Cartesians. It's large format (11" X 14"), with 62 pages. I am printing it through magCloud using their spiral binding option. I was not drawn to the spiral bound format a first, but after seeing the results think it's perfect for this book. You can see all the pictures here on dry reading and can get your own from magCloud.
The drawings in Cartesians were derived from portions of US patent illustrations made in the first half of the 20th century. They were edited and processed using custom algorithms that broke the drawings into gridded sections reminiscent of graph paper squares. Various programming and graphical stratagies were used to represent the light values found in the originals. I use the Processing language extensively.
Cartesians is fifth in a series of algorythmically assisted artists’ books. Other volumes in the series are SIGNAL TO NOISE (1988), DRY READING (1991) and MARS OBSERVATIONS (2001).
