Cartesians is a book of drawings derived from portions of US patent illustrations made in the first half of the 20th century. They were edited and processed using custom algorithms that broke the drawings into gridded sections reminiscent of graph paper squares. Various programming and graphical stratagies were used to represent the light values found in the originals. Cartesians is fourth in a series of algorythmically assisted artists’ books. Other volumes in the series are SIGNAL TO NOISE (1988), DRY READING (1991) and MARS OBSERVATIONS (2001).
